I would like to see the surgery open during the weekend, perhaps Saturday and Sunday morning? Most places are open weekends now. The doctors could take it in turns to cover these duties. It would be good also for a doctor from the surgery to be on call at night.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback. We conduct an annual assessment of the safety and suitability of this approach for our practice, however at present we believe that extending our working hours further would place our core service at risk with the potential to burn out our relatively small team, and risk providing a sub-standard service. We will continue to assess this regularly and look at a range of options for providing an extended hours offering to our patients in partnership with other practices locally.

It is not easy to see/hear your name called when sitting in waiting room. The whole area for waiting is far too small and claustrophobic. Results for tests done do seem to take a very long time in coming. Can anything be done about this?

Response from Mersea Island Medical Practice

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback. The waiting area is far smaller than we would like, and we continue to work on our project to create purpose-built premises for the practice in the future. The patient call screen shows the name of a patient when they are called and changes colour to highlight this, as well as making a noise. If you have any visual or hearing impairments please let the reception team know and we will do our best to help. The return of test results is determined by the laboratory, and the new lab system will hopefully speed this up. Some results can return the same day, whereas others take a minimum of 3-10 days depending on the type of test and whether the lab has to grow a culture to examine.

I see a problem with the increasing number of patients expecting the practice to expand commensurately in staffing and facilities but which is, as is all too apparent, not likely to happen. If reports are right that the police station site may well be lost and the obvious alternative, Underwoods' site, is 'too expensive' what next: New patients being being allowed to join the list on a 'dead men's shoes' basis? Or older and less able patients being treated here on Mersea, while those younger and more active are consigned to the Walk-in Centre?

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback for us. We continue to work towards the conversion of the Police Station site, and this is not yet a lost cause. This site would increase the physical capacity we have available to support additional patient space, albeit not the funding required to hire additional staff. The NHS remains in a difficult position with funding nationally, and we continue to work with other local practices and commissioners to make the most of the funding available to us.

Generally receptionists are polite. I do not think they should relay medical information e..g. tests results, or question a patient about their medical conditions. I have had X-ray results either filed or left unexamined for 2-3 weeks. Also incorrect information regarding thyroid results.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback. Receptionists only provide the information that GPs ask them to relay in accordance with the practice policy on test results, and it would simply not be plausible for GPs to spend all this time calling and recalling patients to provide information in person. We are currently exploring SMS messaging services to automate this service further and provide additional reassurance to patients. If you have had any untoward issues, please do contact the practice manager to discuss these further in person.

It is good to be able to build up a relationship with my Dr. and I feel in good hands. Booking an appointment is difficult and you have to have lots of patience. I
